The Sunshine Heights Football Club was established in 1971. The club was first known as Albion West under 11′s sponsored by the Albion Football Club. Norm Mcgrath from Braybrook Building Supplies suggested that a new club be started and a meeting was held at the St. Pauls Primary School and Sunshine Heights Football Club was born.
To begin with games were played at the high school on Lachlan rd sunshine, Sunny west high. Mick Collins was caretaker for the school and helped the club out with power and
change rooms (school gym) and the social rooms were at Castley reserve.
Geoff Nichols, Brian Stafford, Tom Norfolk, Ralph Miller, Zamnickie, Les Dignam, John Brown were some of the original committee members. The seniors played in the Western Suburban Football League from 1971 to 1987. In 1988 the seniors moved across to the FDFL which has since changed names to the WRFL. The juniors played in the Sunshine District Junior Football League from 1971 to 1987 before also joining the FDFL.
1973 saw Ainsworth Reserve hold its first game. The facilities were made up of 3 tents (2 change rooms and 1 canteen and also a thunder box).The social rooms at this time were the Stafford residents in the nearby Frank Street. The current pavilion was built in the off season of 1978-1979.
The club has an original theme song which was written by Yohan Charles. He is a Welshman and that’s how we became known as the Dragons.
The club has changed jumpers 3 times over the years. 1971 to 1986 saw Sunshine Heights playing in the traditional Footscray Jumper. 1987 to 2001the club wore an original red white blue vertical striped jumper. 2002 saw the introduction of the current jumper (designed by Lee Knight).
